Mthunzi Festival
This year’s Mthunzi festival was held on August 13, 2009. A total of 233 people attended the festival, including the Mthunzi boys, staff members, the Italian volunteers and many other visitors.
The celebrations started at nine in the morning with a prayer by Pumulo Nomai. Seven groups performed songs, drama, dances, poems and acrobatic displays. These groups were Chisomo, Sos, Lonjezani, Kakabalika, Lilanda Parish Choir, Lilanda Cultural Group and the hosts, Mthunzi. Each group was given 15 minutes to perform.
At about 1:30PM, there was a break for lunch. Each group had packed it own lunch and the Mthunzi Center provided snacks. At 2:00 PM the performances resumed and continued until about six in the evening.
Prizes were awarded to the day’s outstanding performance. Lojezani won first place in cultural performance, with Mthunzi coming second. Lilanda Parish Choir won in the “song” category, while in “poems”, Sos won with Mthunzi second again.
The day ended with a prayer from one of the Italian volunteers and everyone went home.
