POEM CORNER

RESIDENT ANCESTOR

John Sibi-Okumu

As the wedding day drew nearer

There was the small problem of grandmother:

What should she wear?

It was decided that she should have a hat……

A chiffon band to match my suit……

Her dress, a lovely, flowing silk creation

With matching stockings, as befitting her station.

In grandmother’s day the fashion

Was the sisalled loin.

Her breasts assailed by the wind

Young warriors glimpsed her behind.

The beads that hung around her waist,

Symbols of her maiden state.

The leaf is no longer toilet paper…

She had to have something proper

We could neither pretend to forget

Nor let her be an embarrassment.

For the whole world would be there;

Would see grandmother,

Our past come to stare.

As the wedding day drew nearer

There was the small problem of grandmother:

What should she wear?
