Kenya: UN Expresses Concerns over Bungoma and Busia Attacks

NAIROBI-- The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Modibo Toure has conveyed his condolences to the families and the communities affected by the current insecurity in Bungoma and Busia Counties.

He joins with the Government and other humanitarian and development partners in condemning the inhumane acts, which have claimed 10 lives, including women and children, and left over 100 others seriously injured. Tension in the area remains high and residents are apprehensive, as the motive behind the indiscriminate attacks is unknown. Livelihoods and ordinary activities have been brought to a standstill.

“Cognisant of the recent security incidents in Tana River County, I would like to urge the Government to take appropriate action to promptly stem the insecurity in Busia and Bungoma, in line with applicable international and domestic standards on protection of civilians and respect for human rights. I acknowledge efforts undertaken thus far by the Government and other local peace and response initiatives”,   Modibo said.

He also urged the Government to ensure the provision of assistance to the affected people and support them in rebuilding their livelihoods.

He will continue to monitor closely the developments in Bungoma and Busia.

Modibo reiterated the UN’s readiness to support ongoing efforts to assist Kenyans affected by the current floods across the country.
