Nairobi- –Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Christian Manahl, Friday chaired a meeting with some 40 representatives from a number of emerging regional administrations, social and political groups in Southern and Central Somalia, with a view to garnering their support for the peace process.
Mr. Manahl urged the groups to work together and with the Transitional Federal
Government (TFG) to stabilize their regions and fight extremism and to alleviate the
terrible effects of the drought in Somalia.
“The impact of your unified efforts will bear greater fruit in both alleviating the suffering
of your people and demonstrating your dedication to advancing the peace process. This
is what the world wants to see.”
Mr. Manahl also informed the group on the High-Level Consultative Meeting on Ending
the Transition which will take place in Mogadishu from 4-6 September 2011. Although
the meeting brings together the Transitional Federal Institutions and the regional
authorities and groups recognized by the TFG, Mr. Manahl explained that it is part of an
expansive process aimed at associating all the groups who are working to promote peace
and reconciliation in Somalia.
