Lesotho: UNESCO, ECONET Sign ICT Accord for Disadvantaged Groups

Maseru-- The Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO and ECONET Telecom Lesotho, a mobile phone company Thursday, signed an agreement on the provision and enhancement of access to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to the Lesotho’s disadvantaged communities in the capital, Maseru.
UNESCO General Secretary, Mapaseka Kolotsane praised ECONET Telecom Lesotho , saying it is the first private sector to support its work in the development of Lesotho. He added that this ground breaking partnership is a breakthrough for the development of rural communities.
The Chairman of Communications and Information Committee of UNESCO, ‘Mats’eliso Moshoeshoe Chadzingu, said that they have chosen libraries that are located in Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s hoek and Mafeteng to provide ICT to library users.
Mpine Tente, the public relations officer of ECONET Telecom Lesotho congratulated UNESCO for piloting and marketing this project. In her statement, she said that Econet Telecom Lesotho was pleased to enter into such a partnership, as it concentrates on disadvantaged communities needing access to ICT.
