Mogadishu----Two days after the celebration of Africa Day, TFG forces backed by AMISOM troops, have made some important strides by capturing African Village which represents a symbol in the history of Somalia.
In 1975, the Somali Government built a quarter to host the Summit of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU). The quarter symbolically called African Village has been a stronghold of Al-Shabaab until its liberation by the AMISOM forces this Friday. Since mid-February, TFG forces backed by AMISOM troops launched an offensive that has resulted in steady gains such as former Defence ministry Headquarters, Milk factory, Russian estates and the whole area up to Wanadha road in the neighbourhoods of Bakara market.
“We will continue to capture more grounds in order to liberate more Somalis from the Al-Shabaab brutal oppression. In our advancement, we will always be mindful of civilians’ properties and lives, especially public spaces such as Bakara Market.”, said Colonel Oscar Nzohabonimana who led Friday’s successful operation.
A statement from AMISOM said it is still committed to helping Somalis to attain sustainable peace and security. AMISOM will also continue to provide them with humanitarian assistance like free medical treatment, potable water, etc.
