KQ to Outsource Cash Handling Services

Partnership deal with NBK to make cargo customers pay charges at a one stop shop

By Staff Writer

Nairobi… Kenya Airways, the national flag carrier, has signed a cash handling partnership with the National Bank of Kenya (NBK), one of the country’s leading commercial banks, making it easier for cargo customers to pay freight, duty and handling charges at a one stop shop.

The partnership signed between the Africa Cargo Handling Ltd, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kenya Airways and the bank, will see the airline’s cargo customers pay their freight and handling charges at National Bank branches within the cargo facilities at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Following the partnership deal, the bank will now collect the charges at its branches at Kenya Airfreight Handling Limited building and the Nairobi Cargo Centre on a 24-hour basis. The bank will also extend credit facilities to customers.

The contract sealing the partnership was signed by the Managing Director of the National Bank of Kenya, Reuben Marambii and the national carriers Group Finance Director, Alex Mbugua yesterday.

“The bank is providing us with a ‘one stop shop’ through which our customers will now pay for all costs from a centralised cash office within our cargo centre”, said Mbugua, during the signing ceremony between the airline and the bank.

The partnership will also see the bank collect custom duty in addition to the freight and handling charges at the two facilities.

Mbugua said customers were previously required to go through a tedious process that was time consuming. He added that the system they are replacing by incorporating the National Bank of Kenya, was prone to many risks that could affect the airline’s profitability.

“As part of the service that we are extending to KQ, we have deployed our vast expertise in handling cash. Among other things, we will protect the airline from receiving fake currency and facilitate the cash handling element”, said Marambii during the signing ceremony.

He added that they are going to be serving each customer within three minutes, thus saving valuable time.
