US Urges “Civil” Secession Vote in Sudan
US President Barack Obama’s special envoy to Sudan says his country is working to resolve various contentious issues in order to prevent a return to the 21-year civil war that ended in 2005.
With the semi-autonomous South showing all signs of determination to secede, US Special envoy Scott Gration said the US hopes next month’s general elections will pave way for a “civil divorce, not a civil war” after the 2011 referendum.
Two million people died and over four million fled their homes in the two decade war between the north and the south. [PE]
