Tanzania: Mountain Landslide Kills 20
KILIMANJARO, Tanzania
At least 20 people died after heavy rains caused a mountainside to crash into an adjacent village in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro province Tuesday night.
Authorities in Goha village say an unknown number of people are still missing as rescue efforts get underway to excavate bodies from the site of the landslide.
The landslide followed about four days of pounding rains in the area.
Much of Eastern Africa has faced serious drought for the past two years, and the much awaited rains has come in the form of torrential El Niño downpours. [CK]
