SADC Meet to discuss Zimbabwe Crisis

MAPUTO, Mozambique

Southern African states leaders are meeting in Maputo with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in efforts to broker peace and restore order in the falling unity government.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries heads of state are meeting to end the lengthened power-sharing rift and see the implementation of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) and the SADC communiqué of January 2009.Regional leaders present at the summit are Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, Rupiah Banda of Zambia, South Africa’s Jacob Zuma and King Mswati of Swaziland.

Human rights movements are pushing for the regional development bloc to pressure Mugabe to end human rights violations.

Tsvangirai walked out of the unity government mid-last month following continued intimidation of his party members from Mugabe’s faction.
Zimbabwe sunk into post-election crisis following a disputed presidential election in September 2008 in which Mugabe was deemed to have lost but rigged. [ER].
