Nigeria: MEND Wants Foreign oil Companies out Of the Niger Delta
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has warned a resumption of violence if the foreign companies do not leave the oil-rich Niger Delta.
MEND asked the Federal Government to engage in constructive dialogue with rebel groups and come up with lasting solutions in the region.
Mr. Henry Okah, MEND leader has accused the government of not adhering to its part of the deal hence a possible recurrence of the violence.
Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua met with former rebel leaders in the past few weeks and said the government is committed to end the unrest that has cost Africa's top oil exporter billions of dollars in lost revenue.
MEND has been fighting for a fair share of the region’s oil revenues to trickle down to the local people since 2006. [GR]
