Kenya To Pioneer Homosexual Census in June Next Year
Kenya is will be the first African country to lead the way in counting its homosexual population in June next year.
This is an initiative to boost the fight against HIV/Aids scourge despite the fact that homosexuality is against the Kenyan law.
Nicholas Muraguri, the head of Kenya’s Aids prevention programme, told BBC that it was important for the government to reach out to the gay community.
Mr. Muraguri said that survey would help gay men identify each other and also enable officials carrying out HIV tests provide information on safe sexual practice.
Gay rights activist Peter Njane told is optimistic that the survey will play a key role in the fight against HIV.
Homosexual activity is punishable by Kenyan law of up to 14 years in jail.[CK]
