ECOWAS Leaders to mediate talks for Guinea

ABUJA, Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has scheduled a summit of heads of state this week to discuss the deteriorating political situation in Guinea and Niger.

Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua, the chairman of ECOWAS has criticized Guinea’s military rule saying it undermines the peace and democracy of Guinea and could destabilize the region.

ECOWAS has appointed Burkina Faso President Blaise Campaore to mediate in Guinea’s crisis.

157 opposition demonstrators died in the Guinea’s capital Conakry, on the 28th of September when the military opened fire.[GR]
