Guinea: Rights Groups Want Junta Indicted
Human rights groups in Guinea want members to face the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity.
Tierno Madjou Sow, President of Guinea's Human Rights Organization, said last week’s violence that left at least 157 opposition demonstrators dead and alleged public rapes by Guinean soldiers were crimes against humanity that could be taken to the ICC.
The demonstrators were protesting the expected candidacy of military ruler Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, who seized power in December 2008 after the death of long serving leader Lansana Conté.
Camara, 45, is yet to formally declare his candidacy ahead of elections slated for January 2010. [GR]
