Kenyan Prime Minister Odinga Backs ICC

NAIROBI, Kenya

The Kenyan government will assist the International Criminal Court [ICC] arrest suspected masterminds of the country’s 2008 post election violence, Prime Minister Raila Odinga has assured ahead of an impending visit by ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo.

Odinga said that the government would apprehend the arrest and handover the suspects to the ICC.

The post election violence erupted after Odinga, then the main opposition candidate in the closely contested December 2007 presidential poll, accused President Mwai Kibaki of stealing his electoral victory.

Over 1000 Kenyans were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced before the two leaders agreed to form a unity government under pressure from the international community.

Ocampo has declared in recent weeks that the ICC would bring the perpetrators of the tribal skirmishes to justice. [CK]
