Zimbabwe gets aid boost for education

HARARE, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has received a US$70 million donation from the European Commission and various Europe nations to boost its crippling education system.

The UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) along with the unitary government will distribute the funds, which will be used to restructure the system and buy educational materials to ensure that the 700,000 vulnerable children including disabled have access to schools.

Education Minister David Coltart termed the move as a big step in the right direction but raised concern on industrial actions by teachers which could ruin the progress since they are poorly paid.

With the adult literacy standing at about 90% presently, Zimbabwe at independence had one of the best education systems in the continent which has crumbled down due to economic crisis ravaging the country. [ER].
