Minister: South Africa Land Reforms Unsustainable

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa

Land reforms instituted by the South African government to even out racial land ownership are not working, the country’s rural development and land reforms minister has said.

Replying to a question in parliament, Minister Gugile Nkwinti said 29 per cent of the redistribution projects reviewed by the country’s land authorities were unsustainable, and more were projected to fail due to the lack of adequate agricultural support.

The government hopes to redistribute 24.6 million hectares of farmland to black South Africans by 2014, but by June this year only 6.7 percent had been distributed.

Before Nelson Mandela led South Africa into majority rule in 1994, the white minority owned 87 per cent of the farmland. The issue has remained highly political ever since. [ER]
