Madagascar’s Rival Leaders Resume Talks
Madagascar’s two rival leaders have resumed talks aimed at choosing a transitional government to resolve the crisis sparked by the ouster of the country’s president in March.
Current leader Andre Rajoelina and ousted president Marc Ravalomanana are expected to agree on an interim government that will lead Madagascar towards fresh elections.
The negotiations are mediated by a UN-backed team led by former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano.
Madagascar’s political crisis began when Rajoelina forced Ravalomanana to resign using a series of street protests supported by the country’s military.
A deal between the two rivals would end months of crippled economic growth, stalled international aid and diplomatic isolation. [ER]
