Madagascar’s President Seeks AU Recognition
Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina has began a deliberate campaign for African recognition, meeting Libyan leader and African Union Chairman Muammar Gaddafi earlier this week before proceeding on a tour of Senegal, Algeria and Morocco. Returning Tuesday to Madagascar after a three-day visit to Libya, Rajoelina claimed he had won Gaddafi’s and indicated plans to hold elections under a reviewed constitution. Rajoelina was installed in power by the military on March 21, following former President Marc Ravalomanana’s resignation in the face of mass protests led by Rajoelina. Madagascar was immediately suspended by the AU, which branded Rajoelina’s takeover a coup against an elected government. [PE]
