Guinea-Bissau Says No Money for Vieira Death Probe

Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau’s government has announced that it does not have enough money to probe the March assassinations of President Joao Bernardo Vieira and his estranged army chief of staff, Batista Tagme Na Waie. Speaking in Bissau, State Prosecutor Luis Manuel Cabral said international donors had pledged one million dollars for the probe, but had not disbursed the money, making it unlikely that the probe might be completed before elections due in June. President Vieira was assassinated on March 2 by soldiers apparently retaliating the killing of the army chief in a bomb blast a few hours earlier.[PE]
