Ghana’s President-elect Prepares to take Power
Ghana’s newly elected President John Ata Mills has promised to spearhead inclusive policies as he prepares to formally take office when outgoing President John Kufuor steps down on January 7. Addressing supporters outside his NDC party offices in Accra, Mills promised to work with the ruling party losing candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, and to serve all Ghanaians alike. Akufo-Addo has conceded defeat but held on to his party’s allegations of poll irregularities. Meanwhile, the election continues to receive international praise after discredited elections caused mayhem in Kenya and Zimbabwe last year. Mills was narrowly elected with 50.23 per cent of the vote against Akufo-Addo’s 49.77 per cent.[PE]
