Darfur Peace Process Hampered by Rebel Rivalries

Rivalry between various Darfuri rebel groups are slowing the region’s peace process, international mediators have said. The UN estimates that there are up to 30 rebel groups and factions in Darfur, separated along tribal and ideological lines. Meanwhile, Khartoum has sent forces into the neighbouring South Kordofan state following fears that the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which is Darfur’s main rebel movement, may have launched a military alliance with armed groups in the state.[PE]
