75 Killed In Darfur Tribal Clashes

December 13, 2008
13 December 2008 - News From Africa

Seventy-five people, including six policemen, were killed last Friday in separate tribal clashes in South Darfur. Security sources and eyewitnesses say 35 Al-Falata tribesmen and six other unidentified men died in a clash with members of the Habaniya tribe, while six policemen were killed while attempting to stop the conflict between the two feuding tribes. In another clash, 28 members of the Al-Gamir tribe were killed by unidentified gunmen in Ed al-Fursan. The tribal clashes exacerbate a five-year conflict in which an estimated 300,000 people have died and 2.2 million displaced after Black Darfuri rebels launched an armed revolt against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government in 2003, protesting against the region’s marginalization.
