Kenyan PM Vows to Pursue Poll Violence Masterminds

November 19, 2008
19 November 2008 - News From Africa

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has vowed to ensure the implementation of a controversial report on the country’s post election violence, which has threatened a major split in his political party. Speaking while receiving Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen in his office in Nairobi, Kenya, Odinga downplayed the simmering row in his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), terming it as a democratic discussion on whether to try the suspected poll violence masterminds in Kenya or to send them to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Odinga has been under pressure within ODM, from a dissenting wing led by agriculture minister William Ruto, a key ally who is pressing for the rejection of the Waki Report. The report was complied by an independent inquiry into the tribal violence that claimed 1,500 lives and displaced 350, 000 people after Kenya’s disputed December 2007 elections. [PE]
