Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Rejects Regional Proposal
Zimbabwean Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has rejected a proposal by regional leaders for his party to run the disputed Home Affairs ministry jointly with President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-pf party. Tsvangirai said such a solution would be impossible because ZANU-pf regarded his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) with contempt. The proposal was mooted by five heads of state from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at an extraordinary summit held last Sunday to discuss the Zimbabwean impasse and the crisis in Eastern DRC. Tsvangirai and Mugabe have been deadlocked for two months over the composition of a unity government despite signing a power-sharing accord on September 15. [PE]
