Thousands of Protesters Attack UN Base in Congo

Thousands of Congolese protesters attacked the UN's regional headquarters in the eastern city of Goma last Monday, venting anger at the local mission’s failure to protect them from recent rebel attacks that have displaced tens of thousands. UN spokeswoman Sylvie van den Wildenberg said the protesters threw pelted the UN compound with stones, damaging cars and shattering windows. The mob was protesting against violent attacks meted out by fighters loyal to Congolese Tutsi rebel leader, Laurent Nkunda.[PE]
