Nigerian Court Orders Oil Multinational to Cede Land
A Nigerian court has ordered Anglo-Dutch oil multinational Shell to hand over cede the land round its massive oil terminal on the Niger Delta’s Bonny Island to the local population. The court ruling followed a lawsuit filed by the local community, arguing that a 1958 agreement only made Shell a tenant, thereby claiming that the land rightfully belonged to the Bonny people. Shell’s Bonny terminal is considered Africa’s largest, with a holding capacity for over 12 million barrels of crude oil. Land ownership has been a key demand of militant groups claiming to fight for allocation of a larger share of Nigeria's oil revenues to the local communities in the Niger Delta.[PE]
