Sudan Queries Kenya, Ethiopia over Arms
Sudan has summoned the ambassadors of Ethiopia and Kenya over concerns that their governments were supplying arms to its semi-autonomous South. The two envoys were engaged by Sudanese foreign ministry officials Monday after an Ethiopian plane arrived with light arms landed in Juba, South Sudan, last Saturday. Ethiopian Ambassador Ali Abdo however said the plane was delivering the weapons for display at an arms exhibition in Juba. Last month, Somali pirates hijacked a Ukrainian ship carrying arms which Kenya claimed belonged to its military, but which are widely suspected to be destined for South Sudan. Both Khartoum and South Sudan are prohibited from acquiring weapons without the other’s approval under a 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended their 21 year civil war. [PE]
