Defiant Mugabe Swears In Two Vice Presidents
Zimbabwean President unilaterally swore in two vice presidents, deepening a row that could see the country’s opposition pull out of a September 15 power sharing deal. Vice Presidents Joyce Mujuru and Joseph Msika were sworn in at State House, Harare, just a few hours before former South African President Thabo Mbeki arrive to help salvage the power sharing agreement that appeared doomed after Mugabe unilaterally annexed all the ministries contested by his ruling Zanu-PF party and the opposition MDC. Under the power sharing accord, Mugabe will remain president while MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai becomes prime minister. The European Union has condemned Mugabe's apparent defiance of the accord, warning that it impose fresh sanctions against Zimbabwe. [PE]
