Somali Islamists Execute Clan Militia Leader
A key Somali clan militia leader was executed Sunday by Islamist fighters in the key port city of Kismayu. Salah "OJ" Hassan was killed by Islamist gunmen after being detained for two days at Kismayu’s main police station. Hassan was released then felled in a hail of bullets as he walked out of the police station. Hassan’s stronghold was the island of Kudhaa, and his arrest occurred while he was on a personal visit to Kismayu. Hassan’s clan militias have variously battled with Islamist groups from Kismayu, which accused him of maintaining links to American spies. [PE]
