DRC, Rwanda in Row over Rebels
A diplomatic row is simmering between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), ignited by intense combative activity by a resurgent Congolese Tutsi rebel leader Laurent Nkunda. Days after Nkunda’s forces overran a military camp in Rumangabo, Eastern Congo, the DRC is accusing Rwanda of supporting Nkunda, with Congolese envoy to the UN Ateku Ineka claiming that Kigali had deployed forces along the joint border possibly in preparation to attack the DRC. On the other hand, Rwandan Foreign Minister Rosemary Museminali accused the DRC of forming an alliance with remnants of the late Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana’s army and the Hutu Interahamwe militia widely blamed for Rwanda’s1994 genocide.[PE]
