More African Countries Ban Tainted Chinese Milk
Senegal and Liberia have joined other eight other African countries that have banned Chinese milk products after tainted milk killed four babies and left 53,000 others ill in China. Senegalese Livestock Minister Oumou Khairy Gueye Seck and Liberian Commerce Minister Frederick Nuckeh announced the bands in their respective countries, both of which have ordered customs authorities to bar any further imports of Chinese milk products. Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Togo effected the bans much earlier after investigations found the milk tainted with melamine, a chemical used to produce plastic that can make diluted milk appear richer in protein than it actually is.[PE]
