Tutu says South Africa Needs Viable Opposition
Eminent South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said he supports the creation of a viable opposition party in South Africa, saying real democracy would only flourish in the presence of a possible alternative government. Tutu said he was dismayed by infighting within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), which recently forced President Thabo Mbeki to resign. In power since the attainment of black majority rule in 1994, the ANC has nearly 70 per cent control of parliament, giving it a clear monopoly over South African politics and governance. [PE]
