Zimbabwean Trade Unions Reject Power Sharing Deal
October 2, 2008
2 October 2008 - News From Africa
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has rejected the September 15 power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, saying it leaves Mugabe with too much power. ZCTU President Lovemore Matombo says the deal did not portend any real power sharing as it makes Tsvangirai a largely ceremonial prime minister “at Mugabe’s mercy”. The ZCTU is a powerful body that gave birth to Tsvangirai’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) nine years ago.[PE]
