CAR rebel leader Says New Amnesty law 'unacceptable'

2 October 2008 - News From Africa

A rebel leader in the Central African Republic has termed a new law to protect rebels and certain government officials from prosecution for some crimes "unacceptable”. Exiled rebel leader Jean-Jacques Demafouth said the law, which was passed Monday by the country’s parliament to pave way for inclusive dialogue between the government and rebels, gives an unrealistically short period of two months for his rebels to disarm. Demafouth said he would seek audience to explain his group’s position to the government. A former defence minister and losing presidential candidate in 2005, Demafouth has led the rebel People's Army for the Restoration of Democracy (PARD) from exile in Paris for the last three years.
