September 29, 2008
29 September 2008 - News From Africa
A Kenyan teacher’s union has announced that it will hold a nationwide strike starting October 3 to agitate for a higher pay. The date was announced by Njeru Kanyamba, the secretary-general of the Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers Union (KUPPET), who declared that talks to harmonise teachers' salaries with those of regular government civil servants had broken down. Kayamba said the teachers would defy a court order declaring the strike illegal, which was obtained by the education ministry’s Teachers' Service Commission.[PE]
