Niger Delta Militants Threaten to Restart “Oil War”
The main militant group in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta has accused the country’s security forces of bombing a camp belonging to one of its leaders without provocation, saying it may respond by resuming attacks on the country’s oil industry. In a statement released online, Gbomo Jomo, spokesman of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), alleged a heavy helicopter air strike against militant leader Ateke Tom's camp. MEND says it is considering calling off a unilateral ceasefire it issued after one week of sustained attacks against petroleum plants and infrastructure in an “oil war” against the Nigerian government earlier this month.
