Rwanda Genocide Court Jails Ex-Prosecutor for Life
A special UN court has sentenced former Rwandan deputy prosecutor Simeon Nchamihigo to life in prison for his role in the country’s 1994 genocide. The Tanzania-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) made the ruling Wednesday after finding Nchamihigo guilty of genocide, murder and crimes against humanity. Nchamihigo had been accused of telling the Hutu Interahamwe militia in Cyangugu prefecture to fish out and kill the largely Tutsi supporters of the then rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front in April 1994. The ICTR was formed to try alleged perpetrators of the genocide in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed. [PE]
