20 September 2008 - News From Africa

Signs of discordance have reemerged in Somalia’s interim government, with the country’s President and prime minister resuming a feud barely one month after agreeing to bury the hatchet. Sources say Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein has led a faction of loyal ministers to talks with an opposition delegation Djibouti City without President Abdullahi Yusuf’s consent. On the other hand, Yusuf has announced plans to travel to the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, with Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed, who is one of 10 anti-Hussein ministers Yusuf wants reinstated to the cabinet despite being rejected by the Somali parliament. In Auhgust, Ethiopian leader Meles Zenawi brokered a reconciliation between Yusuf and Hussein, helping end weeks of feuding between the two leaders.[PE]
