Algerian Security Foil Planned Bombing
Algerian security services foiled a series of terror bombings planned to occur in the eastern part of the country on the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001 US attacks. Local newspapers have reported that police acting on a tip-off last week arrested a senior militant and used a map found in his possession to collate details of the would-be suicide bombers and their targets, which included a market, police station and a regional security base in El Oued, a town 650 km southeast of Algiers. Last month, a spate of terrorist bombings mostly claimed by a group calling itself Al Qaeda’s North African branch killed at least 107 people in Algeria.[PE]
