Uganda Mulls Military Campaign against Kony
The Ugandan government is considering a military operation to wipe out the rebel Lord’s Resistance army (LRA), a state owned newspaper has reported. Two days after LRA leader Joseph Kony failed to turn up at a meeting he requested with a Ugandan government delegation in South Sudan, the New Vision says President Yoweri Museveni is consulting with UN special envoy Joaquim Chissano on the way forward, with a high possibility of military action. Kony refused to sign a deal despite completing two years of negotiation with the government last April, insisting on an amnesty from the International Criminal Court. On September 10, Kony kept Chissano and the government delegation waiting in Juba and finally failed to show up at the signing meeting he had requested. [PE]
