Curfew Imposed in Ghanaian City after Pre-poll Skirmish
A 12 hour curfew has been imposed on the Ghana’s northern city of Tamale following an episode of pre-election violence that killed three people at a rally in the town last week. The three were killed in an August 31 shooting incident that disrupted a campaign rally organized by the ruling New Patriotic Party. Later on, a Tamale-based opposition leader, Alhaji Mahama Jeboni, was attacked by thugs who burned his home and eight vehicles. Ghanaians go to the polls in December to replace President John Kufuor, who is completing his second and final term in office. Polls have predicted a close race between the ruling party candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo and Opposition leader John Atta-Mills. [PE]
