Mauritania Junta names Cabinet

2 September 2008 - News From Africa

Mauritania's junta-appointed prime minister, Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf has named a new Cabinet, nearly a month after a coup in the Islamic nation.

All those named to the 28 posts come from political parties that supported the August 6 coup that was led by Gen Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz. Four ministers - of defence, economy, finance and justice - remain in positions held before the military deposed the country's first freely elected president.
The junta said in a statement that Prime Minister made the appointments late on Sunday.
A transitional government is supposed to lead the north-west African nation until elections are held. No date has been set for the poll.

Though the coup drew international condemnation, it was greeted with a mixed reaction within Mauritania. On Thursday police broke up a protest by hundreds of people in Nouakchott who went out to protest against the coup. The European Union has also called for the release of President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, and his prime minister who were detained after the army takeover. The Arab League and African Union each had also expressed concern and sent missions to Nouakchott.
