Nigeria Cancels Niger Delta Summit
A planned summit to pacify the Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger delta has been postponed, the country’s energy ministry has announced. The summit has been cancelled following strong opposition from grassroots leaders and local militant groups, who insist that a summit is unnecessary as the regions problems are well known and only need political will to resolve. For many years now, local militant groups have sporadically attacked oil facilities, demanding more use of oil revenues in the improvement of the region. Energy Minister Odein Ajumogobia has assured that the federal government remains committed to resolving the restive Delta’s problems. [PE]
