UN, AU Condemn Attack on Darfur Camp
The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has released a statement condemning the Sudanese government of using excessive, disproportionate force against civilians in Monday’s raid on a displacement camp in Kalma, southern Darfur. UNAMID said the raid was a violation of the 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement, and criticized the Sudanese military for using heavy arms against the camp’s civilian residents, who only brandished sticks, knives and spears. An estimated 64 people were killed and 117 wounded in the raid, which Khartoum has said was meant to confiscate weapons and drugs from amidst the estimated 80,000 people living in the camp. [PE]
