Kenyan AG Rules Out Poll Violence Amnesty

August 26, 2008
26 August 2008 - News From Africa

Kenya’s Attorney General Amos Wako has ruled out a general amnesty for suspected perpetrators of the ethnic skirmishes that followed the country’s controversial 2007 presidential election. Speaking to a Commission of Inquiry into the post election violence, Wako said all suspected perpetrators should be tried and only absolved if there is no sufficient evidence liking them to the violence. An estimated 1500 people were killed in clashes that erupted after both incumbent President Mwai Kibaki and Opposition leader Raila Odinga claimed victory in the election. The two leaders later formed a unity government with Kibaki as president and Odinga as prime minister . [PE]
