Zimbabwe Opposition Warns against Convening Parliament

Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has warned against state plans to convene parliament, saying it could jeopardise talks towards the formation of a unity government. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who spoke after meeting Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Nairobi as he continued his 10 day tour to rally support from African leaders, said the House reopening contravenes the Memorandum of Understanding binding him and President Robert Mugabe to the talks. Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF narrowly lost its parliamentary majority to the MDC, but is rumoured to have crafted an alliance with a splinter faction of the MDC led by Arthur Mutambara to help it regain control of the House.
