UN Renews Mandate for AU Troops in Somalia
The UN Security Council has renewed the mandate of an African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission in Somalia for six more months. The Security Council also passed a resolution urging all member states to contribute financial human and equipment resources for the AU mission, christened AMISOM. The Somali government and the AU have in recent months pleaded with the UN to deploy its own peacekeeping troops to replace the ill-equipped AU mission, which lacks the numbers and resources required to stabilize the war-torn horn of Africa country.
