Darfur Gunmen Fire at UN Mission Helicopter
August 12, 2008
12 August 2008
Unidentified gunmen in Darfur shot at a helicopter belonging to the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, damaging its rear end and radio. UN spokesman Noureddine Mezni said that while there were no casualties, the damage inflicted forced the helicopter to return to its originating airfield. UN and African Union peacekeepers have frequently been attacked by armed gunmen, with one ambush killing seven soldiers last July. [PE]
