Guinea Bissau Navy Chief Over Failed Coup
Guinea Bissau authorities have arrested the country’s navy chief, saying he had plotted to stage a coup a few days ago. Army spokesman Arsene Balde announced Friday that Rear Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchute, the commander of the navy, had been arrested for conspiring with a group of senior military officers to topple President Joao Bernardo Vieira. Guinea Bissau, which has experienced military coups and uprisings for decades, currently faces political turbulence after President Vieira’s dissolved parliament a few days after three leading political parties ditched his ruling coalition.[PE]
